CHAPEL HILL POLICE DEPARTMENT: Investigate 18 Vehicle Break-ins In One Day, Remind Residents to Llock Doors

Chapel Hill Police Department issued the following announcement on Aug. 23. 

The Chapel Hill Police Department is reminding residents to lock their vehicles. Officers are investigating 18 vehicle break-ins that happened early Monday, beginning at about 3:30 a.m. Most of the break-ins were on Abbot Place. Others happened on residential streets near Homestead Park. In each case the vehicle was unlocked. Three of the vehicles were stolen. Officers are working to gather a description of the suspect(s) in these cases.

The Chapel Hill Police Department asks residents to take the following vehicle safety steps:

  • Always remove valuables
  • Never leave firearms inside
  • Always lock unattended vehicles
Anyone with information should contact the Chapel Hill Police Department at 919-968-2760 (8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday) or call 911. Callers who wish to remain anonymous can call Chapel Hill-Carrboro-UNC Crimestoppers at 919- 942-7515. Information that leads to an arrest could be eligible for a reward up to $2,000.
