Town of Chapel Hill issued the following announcement on Nov. 1 .
At Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation, we understand the important role recreation plays in the wellbeing of our residents. As park and recreation professionals, we also recognize it's essential we take a thoughtful and methodical approach to reinstating open gyms.
The Chapel Hill Community Center Gymnasium, the Northside Gymnasium at Hargraves Park and Rashkis Elementary School Gymnasium are now available for open play basketball and volleyball with a limited capacity. To participate, patrons can reserve up to three open play times a week, no more than seven days in advance. Open play is a combination of dedicated days and times for all individuals and skill levels to play, practice or enjoy a pick-up game at our indoor gymnasiums. Private instruction, personal training, team practices, and group lessons are not permitted during open play.
What ages may participate?
To provide an equitable opportunity for all to participate we’ll offer reservable open play times for four separate age ranges: Youth; Teens; Adults; and 50 years and older. All participants 9 years old and younger must be accompanied by someone age 16 years or older. We'll maintain a limited capacity of no more than 20 patrons in one facility (10 max per court).
How can I reserve my spot in advance?
Available days and times are displayed online on our reservation platform. Up to three reservations a week, no more than seven days in advance are available. Patrons can also “drop-in” to reserve a space at the Chapel Hill Community Center Gym and Northside Gym at Hargraves Park; however, availability is on a first come first serve basis until the maximum occupancy is reached. Drop-ins are not available at Rashkis Elementary School Gym; patrons must register on-line and bring a copy of their receipt for entry.
What does it cost to play?
The daily admission fee for patrons 18 and older is $2 for residents and $3 for non-residents charged when you complete your reservation on-line. Patrons with a current gym pass will not be charged the daily admission fee during registration. Annual and 20-visit Basketball passes can be purchased at the Chapel Hill Community Center Gym or Northside Gym at Hargraves Park.
Patrons 17 and under, or 18 with a current high school ID, play for free, but must register for a Youth Annual Basketball Pass.
All ages must make a reservation in advance, either online, by phone, or in person at the gym.
What restrictions apply?
Staff will follow health screening measures and share instructions for entry. Consistent with the Town’s current face covering policy, face coverings must always be worn while inside our facilities, including while playing. Hand washing is required anytime entering and exiting the gym; hand sanitizer stations are also available for use. Frequent handwashing is encouraged to help reduce the spread of germs. No spectators will be allowed in the gym during open play.
We will encourage guests to arrive and leave in their sports attire to help us limit the use of locker rooms and congregating in public spaces. Locker rooms, showers and sinks will have limited availability.
