TOWN OF CHAPEL HILL: Celebrates Arbor Day on Friday, November 19

Arborday

Town of Chapel Hill issued the following announcement on Nov. 12.

The Town of Chapel Hill will celebrate Arbor Day on Friday, November 19, at noon as part of Arbor Week in Chapel Hill. Second grade students and teachers from Northside Elementary School have been invited to join Mayor Pam Hemminger, staff members of the Parks and Recreation Department, and the N.C. Forest Service to commemorate the occasion.

The community may register in advance to view and listen to the Zoom presentation virtually by computer or telephone.

During the virtual event, Mayor Hemminger will read an Arbor Day Proclamation and accept the Tree City USA Award from the N.C. Forest Service. Second grade students from Northside Elementary School will share artwork and poems about the trees they’ve learned about. “My students are really excited to share an art component and poetry”, said Ms. Sayag, a second-grade teacher at Northside Elementary.

Finally, a short video will be shared of the Parks and Recreation Department planting a small urban forest along the Bolin Creek Trail connector, made up of fifteen trees including Oaks, Magnolias, Dogwood, Cedar, and others.

Funding for the tree installation was provided by the Friends of Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation, a nonprofit organization that supports Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation by improving quality of life for all who live, work, and play in our community. To help celebrate our town’s tree canopy, the Community Tree Committee and Mayor Pam Hemminger have also announced the second annual “Mayor’s Tree of the Year” contest. Read more and nominate your favorite tree.
