Chapel Hill Police Department is gearing up to implement various traffic-safety initiatives throughout the month of April. In a recent announcement, the department revealed plans for pedestrian safety enforcement operations and speed enforcement efforts aimed at enhancing road safety for all community members.

According to the Chapel Hill Police Department, the pedestrian safety enforcement operations will target areas with heavy pedestrian and bicycle traffic, including downtown and mid-block crosswalks. The department emphasized the importance of community involvement in ensuring safety on the roads, stating, "Each effort will focus on areas with heavy pedestrian and bicycle traffic, including downtown, and mid-block crosswalks." Additionally, they urged all travelers to recognize their role in maintaining safety, stating, "Officers encourage everyone traveling, regardless of your mode of transportation, to remember that community safety is a shared responsibility."

In conjunction with the pedestrian safety initiatives, the Chapel Hill Police Department will also conduct speed enforcement operations throughout April. The department's primary objective with these efforts is to improve safety for all road users. As per the department, "The Chapel Hill Police Department is also planning at least five speed enforcement operations in April – in addition to normal patrols – with the main goal of improving safety for everyone who shares roads."

Moreover, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has designated April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Highlighting the significance of this awareness month, the administration noted, "April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month." They emphasized the dangers of distracted driving, citing statistics that reveal its impact on road safety. "According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving claimed 3,522 lives in 2021 alone, making it a leading cause of car accidents in the United States."

In line with promoting road safety, Chapel Hill Town Council adopted a Vision Zero Resolution in October 2021. The resolution seeks to prevent traffic-related injuries and fatalities by 2031 through the implementation of comprehensive safety measures. The town aims to create a safe transportation environment for all community members, regardless of their mode of travel.

As April unfolds, the Chapel Hill Police Department's initiatives underscore a collective commitment to fostering a safer and more secure road environment for everyone in the community.
