Chapel Hill Town Manager Chris Blue has appointed David Putnam as the town’s next Economic Development Director. Putnam will begin his tenure on June 24, 2024.

Putnam currently serves as the Senior Director of Economic Development for the Alamance Chamber. Prior to that, he was the Regional Economic Strategist for the Piedmont Triad Regional Council. He also has experience in community development and strategic planning.

Manager Blue stated, “This is a key position for the Town and David stood out among a very competitive field of candidates. He brings the experience and enthusiasm needed, as well as a track record of success working with local and regional partners. I’m confident he will successfully work with our team and our community partners to promote economic vitality and sustainability."

Putnam holds a Master’s of Public Affairs from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a Bachelor of Science in Recreation Management from Appalachian State University. He was recently credentialed as a Certified Economic Developer by the International Economic Development Council.

“In my new role, my goal will be to collaborate with partners to support current businesses, attract new business, and implement creative strategies to advance the town’s purposeful growth,” said Putnam. “I am honored for the opportunity to work with the town’s great team and contribute to such a vibrant community.”

During the search process, Katie Bowden served as Interim Director. Manager Blue thanked her for her service, saying, “Katie skillfully led the Economic Development team through this time of transition. I’m thankful for her steady hand and stewardship of major projects like the Downtown Streetscape Master Plan.” The position became vacant earlier this year when Dwight Basset retired after sixteen years with the town.
