Town of Hillsborough issued the following announcement on Oct. 2.
Downtown Churton Street traffic will be detoured Oct. 5-6 while the N.C. Department of Transportation removes a large oak tree from the right of way.
The tree, which has died and presents a hazard to motorists and pedestrians, is located on the west side of North Churton Street between Tryon and Queen streets. Signs will be posted for the detours which will be as follows:
Southbound traffic:
- East on East Queen Street
- South on North Cameron Street
- West on East Tryon Street
- East on East King Street
- North on North Cameron Street
- West on East Queen Street
Police will be stationed at the intersection of North Churton Street and U.S. 70 to direct southbound tractor-trailers — which are not supposed to drive through downtown anyway — east on U.S. 70. Police will also be stationed at the intersection of North Cameron Street and St. Mary’s Road to divert any northbound trucks onto St. Mary’s Road toward U.S. 70.
Churton Street is a state-maintained road under NCDOT’s jurisdiction.
