Town of Hillsborough issued the following announcement on Oct. 9.
Safely dispose of unneeded medications this month at Operation Medicine Drop in Hillsborough.
The Hillsborough Police Department will offer a drive-through event 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Dorothy N. Johnson Community Center, located at 501 Rainey Ave. The community center in the Fairview neighborhood was recently renamed.
All are welcome to participate. The statewide program offers a safe and secure way to get rid of old or unneeded prescription and over-the-counter medications. The service is free and anonymous. The goal is to prevent accidental poisonings and drug abuse and to protect waterways.
Since North Carolina’s first drug take-back event in 2010, the program has collected and incinerated more than 246 million pills. The opioid epidemic is a crisis in North Carolina as well as nationally. An average of four people per day die from overdose in North Carolina, with 79% of those deaths involving some type of opioid.
